Beste Allen,
Groeten,
Danny

Dear friends,
I feel so sad that one of my colleagues (and also friends) has been
infected by SARS. I write this letter to all of you with no intend to
scare anybody but just because I take care of you.
Situation is not as optimistic as you feel. I know you are still enjoying
get-together and showing up in public. I also know many Chinese people
think foreigners are overreacting if they cancel the trip or meeting (the
well-known Asia Forum is also cancelled). Chinese government wants to hide
everything and tell you the disease is in control… Don't believe that.
I can understand the reason Chinese government is doing this is to protect
the reputation and economy. The disease actually started from the end of
last year when I was in Guangzhou then. China wanted to conceal the secret
from WHO until it was widely outbroken a couple of weeks ago. The whole
world and WHO are condemning China's behavior now…
Jeff Immelt held a conf call with Steve Schneider and other China business
leaders last night and asked China Team to take some actions….
At least three GE SH employees have been infected… At least two persons
in Plaza 66£¨ºãÿ¡¹ã³¡£© have been infected… Families of GE expatriates in
China begin to evacuate… (families of Steve Schneider will be on plane
this Friday and evacuating
from Shanghai) On the plane outbound China, it is crowded and you even can
not get a ticket; on the plane inbound, 30% load factor… The disease has
been spread out very fast, and whole China, not only Guangdong, is Risk
Level 1 area now… Several GE US employees have been in hospital after
returning from China and their kids are also infected by them… I feel so
sad one of them is my friend…
Everyone who has just come back from Asia is required to stay at home for
at least one week before coming in office… One GEAE US employee was
evicted from a dentist clinic after he had told the doctor his returning
from China. All Hong Kong and Taiwan airlines require flight attendants to
wear mask and some also require passengers to do so on plane… Yesterday,
one airplane of American Airlines from Japan to US was quarantined in US
airport due to four persons, including two crews,
were found infected…
All schools in Hong Kong and Singapore are closed…
Many GE employees in Hong Kong and Taiwan are staying at home…
More than 50% of people are wearing masks on street…
Information about SARS can be found everywhere in airport and on headlines
of newspaper and TV in Asia except China mainland… (information
asymmetry)
Travel Center is asked not to issue any ticket inbound China…
I don't know how about your business, but GEAE stop approval on both
inbound and domestic trip in China. I really don't want to tell you how
many people have died. But please don't trust the number you read…
I do not mean to scare any of you, but just hope you take care of yourself
and family!
